Solo Para Sailing Speed Record

We are thrilled to share the work of the Paraspeed team, who used Gomboc for simulations while looking at setting the disabled sailor sailing speed record.

Paraspeed.org is the official publisher of extreme speed records set by people with disabilities and is dedicated to promoting the inclusion of mentally and physically challenged humans of any age and ability into high performance activities. Paul Wager (see above picture) aims to set the Solo Para Sailing Speed Record in a modified Diam24 trimaran.
These boats are usually sailed by a team of three hiking out over the water to provide the righting moments. However, the need for the sailor to be strapped in along the centreline severely decreased the size and range of the righting moment.

With the use of the Gomboc Designer software, the positioning of the sailor and the effects this had on performance in a range of wind speeds and sea states in upwind and downwind running were studied to optimise the speed and safety of the boat.

Make sure to take a look at Paraspeed.org for more projects by this amazing team.
